Tech Support = Bad Idea?

This is sad, I’ve owned this computer for about 8 months now. After 6 months  my warantee expired, so now HP wants to charge me for technical support! 50 bucks for a 10 minute phone call. Here’s what I did…
My BD-ROM wasn’t reading my blank CD-R discs. So, I had no idea what the problem was. I thought perhaps it was the driver, so I unisntalled it, and forced Windows to redetect the drive and reinstall the drivers. Once the device successfully installed, it still wouldn’t detect any of my drivers! So, I called Tech support. Well, they made me give them all of this ridiculous information all to tell me my pathetic 6 month warantee had expired. Great! I wasted 5 minutes giving up all of that just to be informed that they can’t service my machine without taking an arm and leg.

Then, I decided to be somewhat rude, and said simply “I’m not paying that much for a 10 minute phone call, I’m sorry”, and hung up.

I went online to HP’s forums and got registered. Then I ran a query for “can’t read blank discs” and found information on Upper and Lower filter removal. After following some simple steps, my problem is fixed! I can detect and burn CD-Rs again.

So, some friendly advice; don’t rely on technical support to solve your problems, when you can most likely find the answers just as fast by running a query on the product’s support forum(s).
